Diabetes FAQ: How frequently should I eat to keep my blood sugar in check?

Here's a common question you might have -- how often should you eat in order to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level. Well, we give you the answer. According to Dr Balaji J Mohan, Consultant Diabetologist, Apollo Sugar, Bangalore, a diabetic should be careful while planning his/her meals. Well, according to the America Diabetes Association, eating small and healthy meals that contain fruits, whole grains and vegetables evenly spaced out throughout the day is the best way to keep your blood sugar levels in check. While there isn't any standard time-table to eat your meals, doing so every two to three hours helps keep you safe from either very high or low blood sugar levels.   • Do not over eat. If you are going out for a meal, make sure you have a small salad or cup of soup before stepping out.
  • Choose the foods you eat wisely. Eat foods that are either grilled, baked or barbequed instead of those that are fried.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day as water will help keep you hydrated and allow for proper absorption of the food you eat.
